logic, captain?
I just took the “Logical Thinking” quiz on OkCupid, and scored 100%, which I confess pleases me, given how much I value the ability to think logically.

However, I am dogged by the knowledge that it could just have easily been 93%, as I was only able to calculate 14 of the 15 questions. I finally gave up and made a slightly-educated guess for the other, and apparently I was correct. But the test did not offer answers or explanations at the end, dammit! Which means my brain is still gnawing away at the problem. Arrrgh.

Here’s the question that vexed me. If you Get It, please explain.

Each number shown below follows a certain rule. Figure out the rule and fill in the missing number.

August: 9 June: 6 October: 12 September: ?

Possible answers: 3, 12, 16, 18

There's a discussion here. As they point out, though, OKC lacks answers as well as explanations, so it's unclear. :)

Vexation continues; apparently penny-arcade is having hosting difficulties. :/

Not sure if you've checked since. And I'd made my answer somewhat indirect so to not have a spoiler for others, but since no one else has posted to the thread...

September = 18. The rule is that it's number of consonants * 3. The misdirection is the focus on these words both a) being a set of months, and b) that months have a numeric value as well.

OTOH, it's not like I solved it on my own. I just googled for the string contained in the problem.

Aargh, I was so close. I had considered both a) the number of letters times 1.5, and b) counting each consonant once and each vowel twice. Both worked for August and June but fell apart at October.

Thank you, my little rat brain can relax now. :D
